Best places to spot Wild dogs
“In which places do you have the best chances of spotting Wild Dogs?
Following discussions on various Africa forums, we’ve also compiled a list of places where you have the best chances of seeing wild dogs. This list is based on our own experiences and findings at the locations we’ve visited and where we’ve encountered these animals.
Since wild dogs are constantly on the move – except when they have newborn pups – you really need to be fortunate to see them. The best time to spot these dogs is during the months of June and July because they often have pups during this period and thus tend to stay in a fixed location (around their den).
Here are our top three destinations:
1) Botswana: Chobe, Linyanti, and Okavango Delta
We’ve seen Wild Dogs during our various trips in both Chobe National Park (Kwando Lagoon Camp), the Linyanti region (Kwando Lebala Camp), and the Okavango Delta (Mapula Lodge & Kwando Kwara Camp). Sightings reports on various forums indicate that Botswana is the ultimate destination for spotting Wild Dogs, with the Okavango region being by far the best area to see them.
2) Zimbabwe: Mana Pools
Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe is home to an impressive 5 packs of Wild Dogs, totaling around 33 animals, making the chances of seeing them during your visit to the park very high! Camps that often report sightings of the dogs include Kanga Camp and Vundu Camp.
3) Tanzania: Selous Game Reserve
Undoubtedly one of the best places in East Africa to spot these endangered animals! During all our visits to the Selous Game Reserve, we’ve seen Wild Dogs, both during our stays at Selous Safari Camp and Rufiji River Camp.
In South Africa, you also have a chance to spot these animals. The place with undoubtedly the largest population of wild dogs is the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park.”
