What should I take with me on a safari?
Everyone who embarks on their first Safari trip often has the same question; What do I actually need on such a trip? How do I best assemble my luggage? What do I take with me, and what do I leave at home?
When you leave on a safari trip, there are several things you need to consider! For starters, the maximum allowable luggage weight. If you are flying to your safari lodges with bush planes, you are often limited to a maximum weight – usually 15 to 20 kg – that you are allowed to bring on board. Additionally, you of course want to take beautiful photos, so a zoom lens is often recommended. Binoculars are also always handy if you don’t want to miss anything during your safari in the bush.
You get it! You quickly end up with excess weight, so the puzzle with luggage can begin, and you will have to make choices. ‘Less is more’ certainly applies here. It is useful to know that in almost every safari lodge, you can have your clothes washed and ironed for free, allowing you to significantly save on the number of pieces of clothing. To fully assist you, based on our own trips, we have compiled a checklist that allows you to go on a reasonably safari-proof trip.
Lastly, another valuable tip! If you are going to an area where there are many Tse Tse flies, avoid dark blue clothing! Click here to view the checklist (right-click to save).
